text and translation

Hreinlífr þú vert,        ok hræztu þinn læriföður;
        halt þú heiðsæi.

Vert þú hreinlífr, ok hræztu læriföður þinn; halt þú heiðsæi.
‘Be pure of life and fear your teacher; preserve your reverence.

notes and context

Lat. parallels: (sent. 8) mundus esto ‘keep neat’; (sent. 11) magistratum metue ‘fear a magistrate’; (sent. 12) verecundiam serva ‘preserve modesty’. This st. occurs after st. 65 in 1199ˣ, very much out of the order of the disticha.
