Note to ESk Sigdr I 4II

[7, 8] í hreinu vatri ‘in the pure water’: Vatr (n.) ‘water’ is an old and rare variant form of vatn n. ‘water’ (heteroclitic -r form; cf. OHG wazzar, OE wæter). See ANG §361 Anm. 1. Other eds regularly adopt the J2ˣ, H, Hr variant (í vatni ‘in the water’), but that reading is not supported by the other ms. witnesses and appears to be a lectio facilior.
