Þá kvað það Brynhildr,
Veldr einn Atli
öllu bölvi,
of borinn Buðla,
bróðir minn;
þá er við íhöll
húnskrar þjóðar
eld á jöfri
ormbeðs litum,
þess hefi ek gangs
goldið síðan,
þeirar sýnar
sámk ey.   (eddic or germanic)

(Then said Brynhild, Budli’s daughter:
‘Atli alone caused all the evil,
born of Budli, brother of mine,
when in the Hunnish people’s hall
we saw the fire of the serpent’s bed shine on the prince;*
I have paid for this journey since then,
for that sight is always before my eyes.’
