Missti lítt,
sús lǫgum stýrði,
rekka kind,
ráðs ins bezta,
þá es norðr
í Nóregi
kristinn mann
til konungs tóku.

Kind rekka, sús stýrði lǫgum, missti lítt ins bezta ráðs, þá es tóku kristinn mann til konungs norðr í Nóregi.

The offspring of heroes, who controlled the laws, little lacked the best counsel when they elected a Christian man king north in Norway.

Editions: Skj: [Anonyme digte og vers XII], [2]. Nóregs konunga-tal 22: AI, 582, BI, 578-9, Skald I, 281; Flat 1860-8, II, 522.

Notes: [All]: Óláfr Tryggvason was elected king of Norway at a general assembly (allsherjarþing) in Trøndelag in 995. See ÓTHkr (ÍF 26, 299). — [1] missti lítt ‘little lacked’: I.e. ‘had the best’. One of several examples of litotes in Nkt (e.g. sts 29/5, 71/4). — [2] lǫgum ‘the laws’: Lǫg could also mean ‘law districts, conditions’ (see Fritzner: lǫg). The men who controlled the laws would be men with executive power. Cf. Sigv Berv 12/8 and Note. — [4] ráðs (n. gen. sg.) ‘counsel’: Ráð (nom./acc. sg.) has been emended to agree with the adj. ins bezta ‘the best’ (gen. sg.).
