Svaraði inn sundrmæðri,
svá kvaz veita myndu
fullting frændum
sem fótr öðrum.
Hvað megi fótr
fæti veita
né holdgróin
hönd annarri?
Drógu þeir ór skíði
skíðijárn,
mækis eggjar
að mun flagði;
þverrðu þeir þrótt sinn
að þriðjungi,
létu mög ungan
til moldar hníga.   (eddic or germanic)

(The son of a different mother answered, said he would give help*
to his kinsmen, as one foot does another.
‘How can a foot help a foot,
or a hand grown from flesh help a hand?’
They pulled from their sheaths the sheathed iron,
the edges of the sword, to the joy of the troll-woman;*
they diminished their might by a third,
they made the young lad sink to the ground.
