Eftir er ykkr þrungið
þjóðkonunga,
lifið einir ér þátta
ættar minnar;
einstæð em ek orðin
sem ösp íholti,
fallin að frændum
sem fura að kvisti,
vaðin að vilja
sem viðr að laufi,
þá er in kvistskæða
kjömr um dag varman.
Hitt kvað þá Hamðir
inn hugumstóri:
Lítt myndir þú þá, Guðrún,
leyfa dáð Högna
er þeir Sigurð
svefni ór vökðu;
saztu á beð
en banar hlógu.
Bækr vóru þínar
inar bláhvítu
ofnar völundum,
flutu ívers dreyra.   (eddic or germanic)

(‘You are thrust back, you great kings,
the last living strands of my lineage.
‘I have come to stand alone like an aspen in the forest,
my kinsmen cut away as a fir’s branches,
bereft of happiness, as a tree of its leaves,
when the branch-breaker comes on a warm day.’*
Then said Hamdir the strong-minded one:*
‘Little would you praise the achievement of Hogni,
when they awakened Sigurd from sleep,
you sat in the bed and the killers laughed.
‘Your embroidered coverlets, blue and white,
woven by craftsmen, were bathed in your husband’s blood.
