In compensation, they were to marry Gudrun to him, and they had to give her a drink of forgetfulness before she agreed to marry Atli. Her sons with Atli were Erp and Eitil, and Svanhild was Gudrun’s daughter by Sigurd.
King Atli invited Gunnar and Hogni to visit him and sent Vingi or Knefrod as messenger. Gudrun knew his treacherous plans and sent a message in runes saying that they should not come, and as a sign she sent Hogni the ring, Andvari’s Jewel, and twisted round it a wolf’s hair.
Gunnar had asked for the hand of Oddrun, Atli’s sister, and had not been given it; then he married Glaumvor, and Hogni married Kostbera. Their sons were Solar and Snævar and Giuki. And when the Giukungs came to Atli, then Gudrun asked her sons to plead for the two brothers’ lives. But they would not. The heart was cut out of Hogni, and Gunnar was put in a snake-pit. He played his harp and put the serpents to sleep, but an adder bit him in the liver.
King Thiodrek* was with Atli and had lost almost all his men there. Thiodrek and Gudrun lamented their woes together. She spoke to him and said:)
