Sigurðr ok Reginn fóru upp áGnitaheiði ok hittu þar slóð Fáfnis þá er hann skreið til vatns. Þar gjörði Sigurðr gröf mikla áveginum ok gekk Sigurðr þar í. En er Fáfnir skreið af gullinu blés hann eitri ok hraut það fyr ofan höfuð Sigurði. En er Fáfnir skreið yfir gröfina þá lagði Sigurðr hann með sverði til hjarta. Fáfnir hristi sik ok barði höfði ok sporði. Sigurðr hljóp ór gröfinni ok sá þá hvárr annan. Fáfnir kvað:

(Sigurd and Regin went up onto Gnita-heath and there they found Fafnir’s tracks, where he slithered down to the water. Then Sigurd dug a great pit in the path, and he got down into it. And when Fafnir slithered away from the gold, he snorted out poison and it fell down onto Sigurd’s head. And as Fafnir slithered over the pit, Sigurd stabbed him to the heart with his sword. Fafnir shook himself and flailed with his head and tail. Sigurd jumped out of the pit and both looked at one another. Fafnir said:)
