Sigurðr var þá jafnan með Regin ok sagði hann Sigurði að Fáfnir lá á Gnitaheiði ok var í orms líki. Hann átti ægishjálm er öll kvikvendi hrædduz við. Reginn gerði Sigurði sverð er Gramr hét. Það var svá hvasst að hann brá því ofan íRín ok lét reka ullarlagð fyr straumi ok tók ísundr lagðinn sem vatnið. Því sverði klauf Sigurðr ísundr steðja Regins. Eftir það eggjaði Reginn Sigurð að vega Fáfni. Hann sagði:

(Sigurd stayed with Regin after that, and he told Sigurd that Fafnir was lying on Gnita-heath in the shape of a dragon; he had a helmet of dread* which all living creatures were terrified of.
Regin made Sigurd a sword which was called Gram. It was so sharp that he put it down in the river Rhine and let a hank of wool drift on the current, and the hank was sliced apart as if it were water. With this sword, Sigurd split Regin’s anvil in two.
After that Regin egged Sigurd on to kill Fafnir. He replied:
