notes: Neither Skj nor Skald attempt an edited text of sts 36-40. As Rydberg (1907, 58 n. 1) points out, st. 36 represents the end of the expanded translation of the hymn Ave maris stella. The material covered by the st. equates to the final v. of the hymn, the four ll. of which are addressed to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit individually and then to the Trinity as a whole: Sit laus Deo patri, / summum Christo decus, / spiritui sancto / honor, tribus unus ‘Praise be to God the Father, highest glory to Christ, to the Holy Spirit, to the Three in One, [let there be] honour’. Although it is not possible to reconstruct st. 36 in full, the outline structure of the Lat. text may be observed in what remains. The first l., Sit laus Deo patri ‘Praise be to God the Father’ is reasonably captured in the first couplet, translated above. Although the l. addressing Christ is lost in ll. 3-4, the Holy Spirit helgum anda dat. is clearly referred to in l. 6, and, if we accept Rydberg’s reconstruction (1907, 57-8), the Trinity (þrennum ‘threefold’) in l. 7.
