Ódyggra manna        skaltu aldrigi
        fagna bráðum bana;
hitt er sýnna,
        at sælir munu
        dyggvir menn, þótt deyi.

Skaltu aldrigi fagna bráðum bana ódyggra manna; hitt er sýnna, at dyggvir menn munu sælir, þótt deyi.

You must never rejoice at the sudden death of wicked men; it is obvious that worthy men will [be] blessed when they die.

Mss: 1199ˣ(75v), 624(148)

Readings: [1] Ódyggra manna: so 624, ókunnra dyggra 1199ˣ    [2] aldrigi: so 624, eigi 1199ˣ    [3] fagna bráðum bana: so 624, bráðum dauða fagna 1199ˣ    [5] sælir munu: munu sælir vera 624

Notes: [All]: Lat. parallel: (Dist. IV, 46) Morte repentina noli gaudere malorum: / felices obeunt quorum sine crimine vita ‘Do not rejoice at the sudden death of evil-doers; happy die those whose life [is] without blemish’. The topic of gloating is also dealt with in Hsv 35. — [3]: 1199ˣ’s bráðum dauða fagna lacks alliteration.
